Connection is What Heals Trauma
I don’t worry about therapists every being replaced by AI. Why? Because one of the biggest factors that lead to healing is the connection and relationship that forms between a person and their therapist. Most of the people who have had bad experiences in therapy say it is because they felt the experience was robotic, they felt like a number, like the therapist didn’t care, and they felt how much they needed real care. Sue Johnson, the founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, has said this, “Emotional connection is crucial to healing. In fact, trauma experts overwhelmingly agree that the best predictor of the impact of any trauma is not the severity of the event, but whether we can seek and take comfort from others.” Not only do we need that connection to heal from trauma, but it also helps to prevent trauma. So, until the day comes that the world allows everyone to love and connect with others easily, therapists will always have a job that AI will never be able to better at.
