Burnout is a Reasonable Response
"The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation." When you recognize that the bourgeoisie is referring to the middle class, it is hard to not agree with Vladimir Lenin’s sentiments when he stated that. Today, most of us feel exceptional stress trying to balance being able to afford a life and actually have enough time and energy to live a life. Our bodies and our spirits are suffering, with a rise in chronic illness and an increase in the need for formal mental health supports. There is certainly nothing wrong with seeking out therapy, and it will usually help, but it is important to recognize when problems within a person actually stem from a larger system that isn’t working right. To acknowledge this helps reduce the shame felt when suffering, where you no longer blame yourself for not feeling better, and you realize that this is a reasonable reaction to the harsh circumstances life has dealt you. Now, what to do with those feelings? That’s a question best suited for activists and leaders among us - but from a therapist’s perspective, the answer is to just do something, anything at all, to help you feel like you are having an impact on the real problems affecting you and those around you.
