Leading By Example
People of all ages come to therapy, but a particularly prominent time to enter into therapy is when a parent sees their child struggling. Parenthood brings out a lot of old memories, past hurts that haven’t been healed, and it becomes clear that we can easily repeat cycles if we don’t actively work on them. As David Bly shares, "Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be.” This is what prompts a lot of people to begin therapy. Not to help themselves, but realizing that by remaining wounded, their loved ones take on those same injuries, and parents tend to want a better life for their children. Therapy helps parents practice leading by example, showing their kids that self-care is important, that investing in oneself is wise and valuable, that they can do hard things, and that they are deserving of peace.
