Self-Talk Through Metaphors

A lot of therapy is tasked with bring conscious what was previously subconscious within own minds. This gives you a greater sense of agency and control over what is lingering there. Like Earl Nightingale said, "Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality." However, sometimes our subconscious doesn’t speak in words. I find it often speaks in images and metaphors. Within my work, I use a lot of symbolic imagery and analogies to help tie what we are seeking consciously to a deeper level. This might be using ART, IFS, sandtray therapy, or any of the several experiential modalities I work with. I find when we can speak on the level of the subconscious, the wisdom and healing we seek out of therapy is better felt and retained.

"Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.”

~ Earl Nightingale
