Support is Vital for Healing from Trauma

"Adversity is like the period of the rain. . . cold, comfortless, unfriendly to people and to animals; yet from that season have their birth the flower, the fruit, the date, the rose and the pomegranate." When Walter Scott says this, he acknowledges that the rain, the adversity in life, is not pleasant. And I do so too. Life’s hardships often lead to trauma and real inner wounds that need healing. However, many people are able to find a sense of growth following a traumatic experience. It’s not always immediate, and it often carries a cost, but a better future is possible and even probable for many. Notice I say “for many” instead of saying that this is the case for all. That’s because some people carry the trauma with them, and never heal, never move forward. What separates those that grow and those that don’t? Support makes all the difference. Whether that support is found at home, within friends, a church, volunteer work, or with professionals, like myself, finding support is essential for gaining growth from trauma. Feeling alone is damaging and is traumatic in and of itself. Having support, a sense of community, knowing that you won’t be left to fend for yourself, it gives you a sense of safety, allowing you to stabilize and build a new foundation from which to grow again.

"Adversity is like the period of the rain. . . cold, comfortless, unfriendly to people and to animals; yet from that season have their birth the flower, the fruit, the date, the rose and the pomegranate."

~ Walter Scott
