Empathy Leads to Legacy

Empathy is often something we learn with time. We see this in the wise words from Ancient Greek Poet Homer: "Yet, taught by time, my heart has learned to glow for other's good, and melt at other's woe." As we mature, gain a sense of safety in the world as we see ourselves as more capable, and have room to understand others - we naturally do so. Even thinking about in childhood, many of us have heard parents say: “You’ll understand when you become a parent”. Often as we gain more experiences, we reflect and better understand what others around us are going through. And in that understanding comes an emotional response. When others succeed, we feel that joy with them. When others are harmed, we weep with them in their pain. This empathy for others is powerful. It stirs us to act, not only for ourselves, but to improve the lives of those around us. Our perspective and motivations become grander, and our influence exceeds our immediate sphere of influence. Our life gains a stronger sense of purpose and meaning as we connect with others.

"Yet, taught by time, my heart has learned to glow for other's good, and melt at other's woe."

~ Homer
